Introduction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Welcome to the course COMM 115 Fundamentals of Communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this welcome message, I will discuss the contents of the course, the readings and the grading elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 – Personal introduction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

My name is Jos\u00e9 Carlos del Ama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although I originally come from Spain, I have spent the most important part of my life and academic career in Germany. I received my PhD from the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before I came to the United States in 2003, I had been teaching and researching in Spain at the Universidad de Navarra (Pamplona) and in Germany at the above mentioned university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My emphasis areas of teaching and research are<\/p>\n\n\n\n

public opinion,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

research methods,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

mass communication,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

new technologies and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

filmic narrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 – Literature<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We will not use any textbook in this course. All the information you need will be available in the corresponding learning units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exams will cover the contents of the learning modules. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3 – About the Contents<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The first week of the course we will try to define what communication is. Furthermore, we will analyze two relevant concepts that determine the process of communication: listening and perception. The rest two weeks, we will deal with the different communication contexts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
