accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The word \u201cpanopticon\u201d is a combination of two Greek words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u03c0\u1fb6\u03bd&nbsp;(<em>p\u00e2n<\/em>,&nbsp;\u201call\u201d)&nbsp;and&nbsp;\u1f40\u03c0\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2&nbsp;(<em>optik\u00f3s<\/em>,&nbsp;\u201cvisible, vision\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vision of all \u2013 the total vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concept was coined by British philosopher Jeremy Bentham, one of the epigones of the Enlightenment and the founder of the Utilitarianism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The panopticon is an architectural design of the ideal ideal prison \u2013 but it was also thought as a model for factories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The panopticon was thought a much more efficient way to keep the people in prison:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The total vision.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was no space to hide,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The controller could see any time anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And most importantly, inmates could also watch and control each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The total vision is, at the same time, the total control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Behavioral Surplus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Shoshana Zuboff is the author who has studied in most depth the role of behavioral surplus in the digital technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the data in this learning unit are taken from her book &#8220;The Age of Surveillance Capitalism&#8221;
